Explore Port Alberni: Your Gateway to Vancouver Island’s Backcountry
Why We Love Port Alberni
One of our favourite year-round destinations on Vancouver Island is hands down Port Alberni and the surrounding Alberni Valley. We’ve explored this region countless times — in every season — and it always leaves us wanting more.
It’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, overlanders, campers, hikers, paddlers, and anyone who craves a deeper connection to nature. Whether you’re from out of province or travelling internationally, Alberni is a must-stop.
But first — let’s talk about the road in...
Getting There: The Highway 4 Adventure
If you’ve driven to Port Alberni before, then you already know that Highway 4 is no joke. It’s steep, winding, and often under construction or closed due to washouts and slides. It’s part of the adventure — just check conditions before you go.
Assuming the road is open and you make the trip (we promise it’s worth it), here’s our curated guide to some of the best outdoor spots in and around Port Alberni — including our personal favourites.
Don’t Miss: Cathedral Grove
Prepare to be humbled. Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park, is one of the most awe-inspiring stops along Highway 4. These towering 800-year-old Douglas firs and red cedars are among the oldest trees on the island — and they truly make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Insider Tips:
Plan for 1–2 hours to wander the trail system
Arrive early or during weekdays to beat the crowds
Parking is free, but RV space is limited

Nahmint Valley: Backcountry Paradise
Tucked within Hupacasath, Tseshaht, and Ucluelet territories, Nahmint Valley is a dream for those seeking untouched wilderness. This region is rich in wildlife, old-growth forest, and cascading rivers, with several stunning campgrounds and off-grid adventures waiting to be explored.
Nahmint Lake Recreation Site
12 beautiful campsites under old-growth hemlock
Pit toilets & lake access for paddling or swimming
Short trail to a scenic hidden waterfall
Finding it:
Navigation here can be tricky, so take your time and follow the signs. There’s a sharp downhill turn from the main FSR that leads you to this gem. Don’t rush — it’s worth it.
Taylor River – Alberni’s Summer Hotspot
Not to be confused with the Taylor River Rest Stop, this stretch of river is home to multiple wild campsites right along the water.
The river here is crystal clear, refreshing, and perfect for a summer dip. It’s not far off Highway 4, but it feels wild and remote — a great spot for a night under the stars.
Two ways in:
Via Canal Main and South Taylor Main (16km in)
Or directly off Hwy 4 at the Taylor River Rest Stop access
Bonus Challenge: Find the Hidden Mural
If you’ve been following our adventures, you might remember the local mural tucked under a bridge in the Alberni backcountry. It’s become a little photo challenge for our community. If you find it, tag us! (Hint: there’s camping nearby)
Bonus Side Trip: Sarita Falls
While technically out toward Bamfield, this stunning waterfall is worth the detour. If you’re chasing waterfalls (and you should be on Vancouver Island), this is one to pin on your map.
Overland & FSR Safety Tips
Port Alberni’s surrounding area is all connected by Forest Service Roads (FSRs) — which means extra caution is required.
Here are our key rules for safe travel:
Headlights on at all times
Use RR (Resource Road) radio channels if equipped
Obey pilot cars guiding oversized equipment
Yield to logging trucks and industrial vehicles — they always have the right of way
General FSR speed is 60 km/h, but adjust based on terrain and weather
Avoid stopping on blind corners or narrow shelf roads
